This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.
