The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Critical Shortage of Weight-Loss Injections

Under 10% of patients who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it publishes its inaugural guidance on the therapies.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide now living with obesity, it is advocating for broader and more equitable access to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, more than two billion could be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidelines recognises that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be managed with thorough and lifelong care," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are significant hurdles to widespread availability to the injections that can help people shift significant body mass, explains the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Despite the present best projected case, the production of such drugs might only reach approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, according to the WHO.

The recommendation urges countries and companies to widen access, via strategies like licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

The injections imitate a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and boost satiety so users consume fewer calories.

Patients commonly begin shedding pounds after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies indicates patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of discontinuing the treatment, because their normal food cravings resume.

Being carrying excess weight increases your risk for contracting medical conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some cancers.

Obesity affects individuals in all nations and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
