In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
