Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
