European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
